Relocating To Orkney, Scotland
Everyone who lives in a city must sometimes dream of moving to a beautiful island surrounded by white sandy beaches and crystal clear waters. Leaving friends and family and starting afresh in a different part of the world is often a frightening prospect and some may well find that too much of a challenge. However, if you do find the drive and courage to take the leap and move to a beautiful remote, uspoiled place, the rewards can be profound.
In 2002 my husband and I decided we'd had enough of city living - a small island off the top of Scotand beckoned to us with a more relaxed, easy going lifestyle for us and our cats. It is hard to imagine two more different places than the seething metropolis of Antwerp and the quiet green pastures and endless white beaches of Sanday.
Prior to moving, we had conducted a lot of research via the internet and even made some good friends on the island of Sanday to which we were moving. These people proved incedibly helpful in helping us get established once we arrived. It really does help to make some reliable contacts before you move. We had also holidayed once on the island two years prior to moving, so knew what to expect from the community and other resources on the island. One thing we should have done is go and look at the property we had purchased on the basis of a few photos on the internet. Then again, had we done so, we might still be in Belgium today. Our first impression of the cottage was how incredibly cold it was - even in July! - but the old oil fired stove soon took the chill away and we were soon snug in our new home.
Sanday's small community of only 600 inhabitants made us feel very welcome and we were invited to all sorts of local events and gatherings. One thing I loved about Orkney is that it lacks religious fundamentalism - you won't be reprimanded for hanging out your washing on a Sunday here. However (and this is very important!), don't expect the locals to alter their ways to suit your urban sensibilities. Having a background in hunting, fishing and agricultural machinery really helped my husband to fit in. About half of Sanday's residents were 'incomers' and they too made us very welcome - you find a that people who move to remote islands are almost invariably interesting and open minded. Sanday is exemplary in that regard.
We took two embryonic small businesses with us to the islands. Orcadia Design, is an Orkney web design company that makes websites for individuals and businesses around the world. Johanna's Art is my commissioned fantasy portraits business, within which I have a rock memorabelia business offering Stevie Nicks memorabilia. At the time these were bringing in more than enough to live to a moderate standard on the island, despite a big setback following the 9-11 attacks when US customers became alienated by 'Old Europe' including Belgium. It took several years for this to subside, by which time we had shifted our focus to the UK and Europe.
Sanday derived most of its income from agriculture - beef production being paramount with some sheep and a single dairy farm. Other industry included creeling (fishing for crab and lobster) and tourism. The public sector provided all the best paid jobs on the island with teaching, healthcare and social care pumping a lot of money into the local economy. Retirees likewise brought a lot of money to the island, both directly and by needing social and health care support. Relations between locals and incomers were usually quite cordial where the latter made and effort. However, planning applications were a particular source of conflict. If there is one piece of advice we can give you, it is not to put in an application to build your dream Spanish style villa on a local beauty spot!
Life on Sanday was good, but we soon came to the conclusion that it would take years to attain an income that would enable us to renovate the pair of cottages we had taken on. It cost an arm and a leg, both in money and lost work time to get our cats to and from the vet in Kirkwall. We sometimes had to fly them there. It worried us that, had one had an accident, it could be many hours (or days in winter storms) until we could get it to the vet in Kirkwall. The only way we could get the money would be for Chris to take a full time job on Mainland which was essentially impossible living on Sanday. We chose to sell our cottages and move to St. Margaret's Hope from where he could travel to work in Kirkwall. Getting a suitable job took many months, but the business eventually took off and we ended up living in a lovely cottage in beautiful surroundings out in West Mainland. Eight years on from arriving in Orkney we have a wonderful network of friends and an enjoyable life in an almost crime free County. I have my art and cats to keep me company and Chris dives in the crystal clear waters and does nature photography. It's hard to imagine anything that would make us leave this wonderful place now.
