Frequently Asked Questions...
Does Amtrak use electric traction anywhere else besides the Northeast Corridor and the Keystone Corridor?
I know that Amtrak uses electric locomotives between Boston and Washington DC, and between Philadelphia and Harrisburg. Is there electric service on any other Amtrak routes.
Yes, I know that diesel locomotives use the diesel engine to generate electricity, and locomotives have electric motors.
Answer:
They used to on the trains going north from Grand Central, but that ended with the consolidation of New York Amtrak services in Penn Station. The only place I can think of is on the track between Penn Station and Croton-Harmon, using dual-mode GENESIS-series engines.
Electric traction is rare outside of the northeast, with the exception of a limited number of mass transit and regional commuter rail systems. Only a handful of industrial and mining railroads use it.
