America's Tipping Etiquette
Americans tip as part of their lifestyle. It doesn’t matter where you are from, when you are in the US you should understand that it is common place and part of the culture. The following is a top 5 guide to tipping for anyone visiting this beautiful country.
1. Have some dollars ready. When you are in the currency exchange, make sure to ask for a certain amount extra to allow for tipping. You should really carry an extra $10 in $1 dollar notes at all times. This means you won't have to ask for change and you can tip whatever value you want easily. Although requesting change is quite commonplace also so don’t be shy about asking if you need to.
2. Bars. In general you should be looking to tip about a dollar a drink when bought at the bar. Of course if you are buying a big round then just tip $3-$4 dollars for the lot. If the beverages are served to you all night at your table then you should really leave a 10% tip on your bill at the end
3. Restaurants. This depends mainly of the style and type of restaurant that you choose. Cheaper take-away style places only really should be tipped maybe 15% whilst more up market eateries should be tipped at a rate of around 20-25% of the bill.If the service goes beyond what you were expecting or the staff were particularly useful then do add a little on the tip to thank them for their efforts.
4. Bags. A porter who takes your bags up to your room will be expecting a tip of $1 per bag. This will be the same at most hotels, health spa resorts and serviced villas alike. You should really stick to this figure unless you want to give more as a result of exceptional service. 2 to 4 dollars should be given the helpers who carry your luggage at the airport
5. Poor service. don't reach for you tipping dollars if you don't find the service is up to scratch. Your reasons should be clearly explained though. Most people who provide a service in the States appreciate feedback and won't be offended when you give it. If you have poor meal or you don’t like the beauty products used during a visit to a health spa for example, speak up and let them know where improvements can be made.
