Frequently Asked Questions...
How can we promote psychology in the third world countries?
I live in Morocco which is considered a developing country, and unfortunately the study of human mind and behaviour which are the aims of psychology is to a larger extent neglected. Can anyone inform me or send me any information about this hot issue? Third world countries and psychology.
Answer:
This is a great question.
One important factor to remember is that psychologists need to be sensitive to cultural factors. For instance, Western European culture differentiates between the mind and body, leading to specializations such as "mental health professionals" and "medical doctors." However, many cultures do not make this distinction. In addition, many cultures do not separate the "psychological" from the "spiritual" in the way that Western culture does. One great book that illustrates this is "The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down" by Anne Fadiman, which is about a Hmong girl with epilepsy and the cultural differences between American doctors and her Hmong family and community.
